1st Day of Service KSC Florida

Dr. Kurt Debus, the Center Director, opened the newly constructed Headquarters’ Building on May 26th, 1965. By the end of the summer, more than 1700 personnel would occupy the facility including a new post office which opened to the public on July, 1st 1965.

The KSC Post Office is considered a contract branch of the Orlando FL, Post Office; however, it was given its own zip code and an official stamp cancellation of “Kennedy Space Center, Florida.”

When the rubber stamps were first applied in the morning the cachet was perfectly straight 3mm from the bottom edge. By afternoon the image started to tilt in one direction or the other.

There are no known “trial” colors or commercial reproductions of this cachet known. All examples are postmarked with the 5 cent letter rate or 8 cent airmail rate and a machine cancel.

All cachets have a white line that extends from the “O” to the last “E” just below the middle. Generally, the left edge is inked better and the lines at the bottom are indistinct.
